About

I lead data and AI work for organisations that need it to stand up to scrutiny, whether that comes from a regulator asking how a decision was made, an attacker looking for a way in, or a board asking what it is getting for the money. Most of that work is about the difference between what an organisation says about its data and what its teams can actually do with it.

I started as an engineer in the Army and have spent more than twenty years since in security, data and AI roles across financial services, utilities, national infrastructure, transport, government and defence. I've been the customer, as the client-side technical lead at the Foreign Office and as CTO of the cyber programme at AWE, and I've been the consultant, at Capgemini, Deloitte and now Actica, where I lead the data and AI service line. Having bought this kind of work, I know which promises hold up in delivery and which don't.

What I write

Ground Truth is about what is actually happening in data and AI, as against what is reported. Tales from the Lab is about what I build, test and measure myself, with the numbers included. I ask the same question of both: what is true, and what evidence would show it.

Working together

Alongside Actica I take on some speaking and independent advisory work, and I'm interested in non-executive roles. If you're working out what AI means for your organisation, whatever the sector, I'm happy to talk.
